Delhi population has surged to over 22.3 million, putting immense pressure on the city’s road network. With more people come more vehicles, leading to daily traffic jams and frustrating delays for commuters.
The city’s roads are now struggling to handle the increasing load, resulting in overcrowded streets and poor parking conditions.
To deal with these growing issues, Delhi authorities are introducing an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS). The system, powered by Artificial Intelligence and deep learning, promises to ease congestion and improve road discipline.
According to S.K. Singh, DCP Traffic, Delhi Police, the project includes advanced features to monitor and manage traffic in real-time.
The system uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to track vehicles and spot rule violations. This includes:
By capturing images of these offenses, the system allows authorities to act quickly and accurately.
Parking is another major issue in Delhi, with many drivers forced to leave vehicles on roads due to lack of space. ITMS connects to all parking zones and helps users check space availability before arriving.
This feature is expected to reduce illegal roadside parking and free up space on crowded roads.
The long-term goal is to build green corridors across Delhi, easing traffic flow and reducing emissions. With AI monitoring traffic patterns, authorities can better plan routes and reduce bottlenecks.
A Detailed Project Report (DPR) has already been prepared, and implementation is underway.
The new system brings more than just convenience. It can also enhance safety by detecting risky behavior, discouraging repeat offenses, and improving emergency response times.
By combining AI with law enforcement, Delhi is taking a big step toward modern, efficient urban mobility.
Delhi’s shift to AI-driven traffic management marks a much-needed upgrade in how the city handles congestion and road safety. While the roads remain crowded, this system offers hope for smoother commutes, safer streets, and a more organized city.
For residents, the message is clear: follow the rules, use parking responsibly, and let technology do the heavy lifting.
