Indian Tech Entrepreneur Buys Island to Launch Network State for Innovators: Balaji Srinivasan, a prominent Indian-origin tech entrepreneur, has bought a private island near Singapore to create a real-world version of his bold digital nation concept, the Network State.
This initiative is aimed at tech founders, creators, and digital nomads, and marks the first physical step in turning Srinivasan’s internet-first idea into a global movement.
The Network State is a new concept where online communities with shared values evolve into real-world societies. In his 2022 book, The Network State, Srinivasan described a future where decentralized communities could one day gain recognition as sovereign nations.
The goal is to build borderless, crowd-funded societies that prioritize innovation, freedom, and digital collaboration.
What began as a theory now has a physical home. Srinivasan confirmed on social media, “We got an island.” The location, a lush, privately owned island close to Singapore, now hosts the first Network School, a three-month immersive experience blending tech learning with personal development.
The Network School offers a unique daily routine. Participants begin with physical training, followed by workshops focused on emerging technologies like AI, blockchain, and startup building.
The curriculum promotes Srinivasan’s core philosophy of building “win-and-help-win” communities — groups committed to truth, health, and wealth through shared goals and self-governance.
Srinivasan was born in New York to Tamil-origin parents, both in the medical field. He earned degrees in Electrical and Chemical Engineering from Stanford and later made a name for himself in Silicon Valley.
His achievements include:
He’s known for questioning traditional systems and pushing ideas around decentralization and digital independence.
Not everyone is on board with the idea. Critics argue the Network State borders on techno-utopianism or even digital colonialism. However, Srinivasan continues to build support, expanding the project with plans for future campuses in Dubai, Tokyo, and Miami.
One participant described the island as “an oasis for gym rats and startup founders,” noting that the experience feels like a trial run for forming a brand-new country.
Srinivasan is actively recruiting people to join the experiment. In a recent post, he invited:
The pitch? “Earn crypto, build things, burn calories, and have fun.”
This bold move by an Indian tech entrepreneur who bought an island is more than a personal project. It represents a new frontier in how societies might form in the digital age.
Whether it becomes a model for the future or remains a niche experiment, the Network State is already sparking conversations about freedom, innovation, and governance in the 21st century.
