OpenAI Eyes Productivity Market with New “Canvas” Tool: OpenAI is working on a new set of productivity tools that could put it in direct competition with industry giants Microsoft and Google. These tools aim to help users edit documents and collaborate through chat inside ChatGPT.
Internally known as “Canvas,” the project focuses on helping users generate, edit, and refine text or code using AI. It’s a bold step that signals OpenAI’s intent to move beyond chatbots and into full-featured productivity software.
The move has sparked conversations in tech circles, with many comparing OpenAI’s upcoming suite to Microsoft Office and Google Workspace. If successful, this could position OpenAI as a serious rival to both companies in the software-as-a-service (SaaS) market.
Interestingly, OpenAI’s ambitions directly challenge Microsoft, one of its biggest investors and collaborators. Microsoft has integrated OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology into its own Copilot AI assistant across tools like Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Despite Microsoft’s massive $14 billion investment in OpenAI, the relationship between the two firms is evolving into a mix of partnership and rivalry. OpenAI’s move into software tools will likely test the boundaries of this complex dynamic.
Adding to the tension, OpenAI has also inked deals with competing cloud providers and built a robust paid subscription model, pushing it further into Microsoft’s territory.
Reports suggest that OpenAI started planning these tools more than a year ago. However, engineering hurdles caused delays in development. In recent months, though, progress has picked up speed, with the company preparing to roll out Canvas as an experimental product.
Following the news, Microsoft’s stock rose by 0.8%, while Alphabet shares gained 1.4% after a positive outlook from Citi. Investor sentiment around OpenAI also improved, with retail mood shifting from ‘neutral’ to ‘bullish’ on Stocktwits.
This growing confidence coincides with OpenAI’s reported $10 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR) as of June 2025, with a long-term target of $125 billion by 2030.
Some industry watchers believe Microsoft may already be falling behind. Many users reportedly prefer ChatGPT over Microsoft’s Copilot, especially as OpenAI continues to expand its product offerings independently.
This shift in user preference might shape how future enterprise tools are adopted and which company leads the productivity AI market.
OpenAI’s upcoming launch of Canvas could mark a turning point in how users interact with documents, code, and collaborative tools. The expansion into software suggests OpenAI is ready to play a bigger role in the daily work of professionals, students, and developers.
If you rely on Google or Microsoft for work tools today, keep an eye on OpenAI. A new wave of AI-first productivity apps may be just around the corner, offering simpler, smarter ways to get things done.
