Pune Metro Expansion: 15 New Trains, 45 Coaches Approved

Share

In a major step towards improving public transport in the city, Pune Metro is set to get 15 new trains with 45 additional coaches. The expansion comes as part of Phase 2 of the metro project, which recently received a nod from the Union Cabinet.

The official announcement was shared on Pune Metro’s X (formerly Twitter) account on June 28. It confirms that this move is aimed at handling the rising number of daily passengers.

Phase 2 to Connect Key Areas with Two Elevated Corridors

Phase 2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project includes two new elevated corridors. These will connect Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi. The total length of the new routes will be 12.75 kilometers, adding 13 new stations to the network.

The Union Cabinet has cleared a budget of ₹3,626 crore for the execution of this phase. Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will manage the construction and oversee the development process.

Why the Expansion Matters: More Passengers, More Need

With Pune rapidly growing in all sectors—especially IT, education, and housing—daily metro ridership is expected to rise sharply. Officials predict an increase from 96,000 daily commuters in 2027 to over 3.49 lakh by 2057.

To prepare for this future demand, metro authorities are adding more trains now. This proactive move is expected to reduce waiting times and improve passenger comfort.

Serving IT Hubs, Schools, and Residential Zones

The Phase 2 expansion will serve major IT parks, commercial hubs, educational institutions, and key residential areas. These additions are set to make commuting faster and more convenient for thousands of city residents.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commented on the development, saying the project will enhance public transport and make life easier for Pune citizens.

Early Work Already Underway

Initial tasks like topographical surveys and design consultations have already started. Officials say these new corridors will ease traffic congestion on busy routes like Paud Road and Nagar Road. The goal is to offer Pune residents a greener, safer, and more efficient way to travel.

What It Means for Pune Residents

This expansion marks a big milestone for the Pune Metro. With more trains and extended routes, commuting in the city will soon be quicker and more comfortable.

Residents can look forward to better connectivity, fewer traffic jams, and a cleaner environment. As Pune continues to grow, these upgrades to the metro system are both timely and essential.

Stay tuned for construction updates and route launch dates in the coming months.
