Pune’s Long-Awaited Direct Flights to Europe on the Horizon: Punekars eager to fly directly to Europe have a reason to celebrate. The government has started expanding Pune Airport’s runway to accommodate international flights.
Currently, Pune Airport lacks direct flights to European destinations due to runway length restrictions.
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol confirmed the expansion plans. Nearly 300 acres of land will be acquired for this purpose.
Funding for land purchase comes from multiple sources: Maharashtra government (60%), Pune Municipal Corporation (20%), Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (10%), and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (10%).
The expansion will enable Pune Airport to handle larger, wide-bodied aircraft required for long-haul international flights.
Mohol expects Pune to start direct international flights to Europe within the next one and a half years.
This milestone is part of a larger plan to boost air connectivity and infrastructure across western Maharashtra.
The government is also progressing on the new Purandar Airport project. Land acquisition is underway, with the airport designed to meet international standards.
This new facility will strengthen Pune’s position as a major air travel hub, improving connectivity for the city and surrounding areas.
Mohol shared that the new terminal at Pune Airport is now fully operational, with all flights shifted from the old terminal.
Redevelopment work on the old terminal has also started to enhance passenger experience further.
At present, Pune Airport operates flights to 35 domestic destinations and three international cities: Dubai, Bangkok, and Singapore.
With the runway extension, international destinations will soon expand to include Europe.
Once completed, travelers will save time and avoid connecting flights, making international travel easier and more convenient from Pune.
This development is a big step forward for both leisure and business travelers in the region.
