Samsung Overtakes Apple in Make in India Phone Production

Share

India is rapidly becoming a global hotspot for smartphone manufacturing. According to Counterpoint Research, India is expected to produce 20% of the world’s smartphones by 2025, even as overall global output slightly declines. While global smartphone production may dip due to weak demand and trade challenges, India is defying the trend with strong, double-digit growth.

Samsung Surpasses Apple in Volume, But Both Are Betting Big on India

In 2024, Samsung overtook Apple in terms of smartphones assembled in India. Its Noida facility plays a key role, especially in churning out mid-range models. Apple, too, has ramped up local production, now making over 14% of its global iPhones in India, a massive jump from just 1% in 2019.

Both tech giants are pushing to diversify supply chains in response to rising tariffs and global tensions—particularly those involving China. As a result, India and Vietnam are gaining prominence, with India holding the edge due to its workforce scale, manufacturing capability, and government support.

Government Support Fuels India’s Electronics Boom

India’s rise as a manufacturing hub hasn’t happened by accident. The government has introduced strategic schemes like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) and the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS). These policies aim to reduce reliance on imports and build a more self-reliant electronics ecosystem.

With these incentives, local manufacturers are stepping up, investing in advanced assembly lines, testing facilities, and higher-quality output. India’s manufacturing isn’t just growing in numbers—it’s becoming more sophisticated.

China Still Leads, But India Is Closing the Gap

Despite India’s rapid rise, China still dominates smartphone manufacturing with over 90% of global production. However, geopolitical tensions and rising labor costs are pushing companies to look for alternatives. India is emerging as a long-term favorite, especially as global brands seek supply chain resilience and regional diversification.

Experts say it will take time for India to match China’s scale, but the momentum is clearly building in India’s favor.

2025 Could Be a Tipping Point for India’s Tech Manufacturing Future

With both Apple and Samsung expanding aggressively, 2025 is expected to mark a major milestone in India’s manufacturing journey. If current trends continue, India could become one of the top three global smartphone producers, reshaping the global supply chain.

India Is Not Just Assembling Phones—It’s Assembling a Future

India’s smartphone manufacturing story is about more than just numbers. It reflects a shift in global trade dynamics, growing local expertise, and the power of smart policy. For investors, manufacturers, and consumers alike, India is quickly moving from an emerging player to a central force in global electronics.
